Addressing the needs of a child during a child custody dispute

The divorce process in itself is a difficult time, but when children are involved, new and more challenging divorce issues can present themselves. Whether a parent seeks more time with a child or seeks to fulfill the child's financial needs, these problems relating to the children are crucial ones to address.

Child custody disputes are not uncommon when Ohio parents divorce, however, parents should be careful how they move forward with these divorce issues in order to reduce the negative impacts on their children. It is important to remember that children are not bargaining chips and should not be used in order to gain more parenting time.

Moreover, parents should not complain about divorce problems to their children. Whether it is during the divorce process or post-divorce, when parents discuss adult problems or talk ill of their ex-spouse, children could be impacted more than a parent might think. Children often pick up on the emotional stress of a parent and can overhear how they are talking about their other parent.

While children might be able to have an opinion about which parent they spend time with when they reach a certain age, it is important not to get children too involved in a child custody dispute in order to avoid additional arguments and adverse effects on the child.

When devising a child custody plan, the best interests of the child should always be the focal point. In some cases, divorce issues could cause parents to lose focus on the best interests of the child, so it is crucial that they understand their rights and options.
