Helpful Tips for New Year's Resolutions

January is arguably the most popular month for divorces for a reason. Many people in troubled marriages have survived another tumultuous holiday season and want to move on in the New Year, and some believe that life-changing actions must be taken quickly if they are to make any changes at all in 2014.

With any New Year's resolution, planning is a good way to ensure that you follow through and achieve your goals. Let's face it, knowing what you have to do is easier than finding out while you are trying to make changes. As such, we offer some helpful tips to those who are considering divorce.

Figure out a budget

This is important in determining what your goals are and separating fact from fantasy concerning your post-marriage life. Even if you feel like you have no money at all, knowing what things may cost in maintaining separate households is critical. This may create a need for temporary support.

Know your assets

While this may be learned in discovery, having a basic understanding of what can (or should) be considered marital property as opposed to separate property is helpful. This can be done by knowing what is on titles (i.e. cars or homes). It may also give you some insight on what you may be entitled to after the split.

Interview attorneys

It may seem obvious that one should talk to multiple attorneys before choosing one, but you may be surprised with how many people do not do so. Since divorce is such a personal and emotional process, it is important to choose someone that you feel comfortable working with.
