Couples without children can keep their marital problems to themselves. But when children are involved, marital strife and divorce ultimately impact the entire family. Parental have to make important decisions during this rough time that could significantly alter their relationship with their children. When married couples in Ohio encounter serious marital issues, their next step might be filing for divorce. This decision also requires the divorcing couple to establish a fair child custody arrangement. This task is not so easily accomplished. It can be especially challenging with the child is very young and unable to express an opinion or make a choice in the matter.
It was recently announced that Sherri Shepherd, a co-host on The View, and her husband have filed for divorce. After less than three years of marriage, the daytime talk show host’s husband cites irreconcilable differences for the reason of their split.
In addition to filing for divorce, Shepherd’s soon-to-be ex-husband requested primary custody of their unborn son. The two hired a surrogate to carry their son, and despite the fact that he seeks primary legal and physical custody of their future son, he wants Sherri to be granted full visitation rights. It is not clear why joint custody is not being sought or whether Shepherd is seeking primary custody herself. She currently has custody of her 9-year-old son from a previous marriage.
Child custody battles can be complicated situations regardless of how long a couple was married. A custody determination could turn into a serious dispute and create a hostile and emotional environment for the kids. When divorcing parents are unable to reach an agreement when it comes to custody of their children, it may be in everyone’s best interests to seek alternative methods.
Reaching out to an attorney may help a divorcing couple properly address their family law issues. This could help them reach a fair and amicable agreement. Furthermore, this can keep the focus on the best interest of the child.
